10 half marathon challenge update…

Leanne and the team at the Freckleton half marathon

Since my last update, we have completed a further 2 runs and now we are on countdown with 3 to go until our challenge is over.

Our 6th half marathon took place on 16 June.  We had been supposed to take part in the Stranraer half marathon on 1 June, but this was cancelled at the last minute due to lack of interest.  A mad dash ensued to make sure that we could still take part in all 10.  Luckily the Freckleton half marathon still had places, this bills itself as the oldest half marathon in the UK and unlike all of the rest that we had completed to date, there was a fun day and fun run too.  The only downside of this half marathon was that we didn’t start running until 2 o’clock in the afternoon, right in the heat of the day.  The weather was gorgeous and the town was packed with people outside all of the pubs cheering us on.

Although this was a relatively small half marathon, the atmosphere was really good and everyone seemed to be in good spirits.  As we made our way round the course, the heat started to get to people as there was at least 4 people collapsed and needing medical attention at the road side.  Luckily, we were unaffected by this and all made it to the finish safely.

Yesterday was the 7th in our 10 half marathon challenge, this time we were in Lytham St Annes for the Windmill half marathon.  As the weather had been good for the previous few weeks, we knew that it was likely to be hot so we had prepared to run in the heat.

We set off at 10 am and the course was flat, we had to do two laps of a course along the sea front and back along the road.  There was only a breeze along part of the course, which made the high temperatures more bearable.  There were no casualties this time, with plenty of water available and a bit of shade to run in, we all made it round the course in one piece and treated ourselves to a well deserved ice cream once we had finished.

Our next half marathon is in Fleetwood on 25 August, so look out for further updates.
