Sunday 24 February was the second of our 10 half marathons, the Great North West Half Marathon in Blackpool. After a 7 week gap from the first one, we were all well rested, fit and ready to run.
One of the main group of us was out injured, but one of our other friends wanted to join us for this run, so the 7 of us made the journey down to Blackpool early Sunday morning.
It was freezing cold first thing as we set off and as we lined up on the sea front, it was no warmer. Some of us were kitted out in thermals and gloves, but the others decided to brave it. Either way, the weather wasn't going to hold us back.
The route this time took us out to Fleetwood along the sea front and back along towards Blackpool Tower. We had to do two laps of this course to make up the 13.1 miles. This half marathon was bigger than the last, with approximately 1,500 competitors and a more varied group of both club runners and amateurs, so we felt more comfortable than we did in the previous one.
This course was also relatively flat and it was advertised as a good course for a personal best time, which was reflected in the times we all got, the average being 2 hrs 10. Some of us took 10 minutes or more off our first time, which we were all pleased with and is a great boost for the next run.
Our recovery is going to be the hardest part of this challenge, as we all have to be ready to run again in 3 weeks in Liverpool, but we are raising money for a great cause and we are determined to complete this.
