5 tech New Year’s resolutions

Best practices for making technology work for you in the New Year

  1. Organise and back up your data

Reminisce on 2016 by going through ALL those files you’ve let pile up on your desktop… then back up your personal files, photos and documents so that your data is safe and secure next year.  It’s far too simple to lose a phone, or for a hard drive to fail, and you won’t realise how valuable your digital files are until they’re gone.  Moving data to a cloud solution is the safest option, especially when you choose a secure data centre.

  1. Set up a spam filter

Constantly receiving notifications that end up to be junk email is a nuisance, and a hindrance to business operations.  Spam emails are one of the most prominent ways that people end up with a virus, but this can be easily prevented with an antispam filter.

  1. Untangle those wires

If your home or office is crawling with tangled, untidy wires, you’re not just in danger of tripping.  Disorganised wires present a fire hazard, and prevent you from fixing technology when something goes wrong.  Organise your wires, clean up dusty electronics and if you need help sorting out your data cabinet in 2017, contact us!

  1. Sort out your passwords

If you’re like most people, it’s likely that you use the same exact password for everything.  We know you’ve heard this before, but that’s really not a great technique.  If someone hacks into one account and reveals your password, then they could potentially have access to all of your accounts.  Don’t leave it to chance!

Make a resolution to secure your accounts in the New Year.  Change your passwords to something more complex than ‘Password123.’  If you’re nervous about forgetting them, you could utilise a secure password manager like Dashlane, which will generate and store secure passwords for all of your accounts.

  1. Secure your systems

You can further protect yourself by installing antivirus software and a firewall, which will prevent malware from being installed on your computer.  We’re partnered with leading antivirus suppliers, and can help implement software on your computers, smart phones or tablets – get in touch to find out more.

Happy New Year from the team at David Allen IT Solutions!  We wish you all a prosperous 2017.
