Aspatria rugby day 2017

Saturday 9 December was our infamous sponsorship day at Aspatria Rugby Club.

Every year we invite a number of clients, colleagues and friends to join us for an afternoon of hospitality as a thank you for their support.  This is a great way for us to thank people for their business during the year.

Throughout the prior evening, the weather was against us seeing freezing temperatures but thankfully, following a pitch inspection, Bower Park escaped the frost that postponed a rash of fixtures throughout the North and got the green light to play.

The day started at around 1pm.  Clients came from all over the county but many arrived on the 12.45pm train from Carlisle which was jammed full with our invited guests and staff.

Sue Winter took to the stage to introduce herself and welcome our guests.  As a newbie to #teamDA, Sue talked about how she had considered joining the David Allen team for more than six years before she finally took the leap earlier this year, thankfully for her it was a great leap to take and she hasn’t looked back since.  Following her great opening, Sue opened the delicious buffet which was laid on by the club’s ladies committee, before the match kicked off at 2.15pm.

This year the Black Reds were up against Keswick in a much anticipated clash between the league’s top two teams.  Keswick started the day two points ahead of the Black Reds but the home side’s 17:8 win reversed the positions in a clash that did not disappoint.  Aspatria now lead the league with 46 points from 13 games and we wish them well for the rest of the season.

Prior to the match kick-off we held our annual pre-match competition in which our guests were given the opportunity to guess what time they thought the first try would happen, what the half time score would be and what they predicted the full time score would be.  Our lucky competition winners coming closest with their guesses were George Sowerby, Gordon Adamson and Steve Pattinson who were presented with their prizes by David Allen after the game.

During the day we took the opportunity to raise money for our Charity of the Year, Jigsaw Children’s Hospice.  We were overwhelmed by the generosity of all our guests and are delighted to announce we raised a fantastic £2,300– a huge thank you to everyone who contributed towards this great result.  Congratulations to Nick Hodgson and Des Bird who each won £200 cash as part of our Lucky Squares competition, Carol Rickerby who won the star raffle prize, a Samsung smartphone, and finally well done to the many other raffle prize winners on the day.

Following the game the club had arranged for the fun to continue with entertainment provided by Matthew Turnbull.  Not to miss an opportunity our very own Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) Steve Balmer took to the stage to show not all IFA’s are the same as he opened up the karaoke with his rendition of ‘Sex on Fire’ by Kings of Leon.  Steve gave it his all, showing if you can’t sing, shouting inevitably will do!

I would like to thank everyone who joined us on Saturday and extend our thanks once again for all of their support in 2017.  The rugby club were once again excellent hosts, a special thanks to Barney Clegg for helping us to organise and put on such an enjoyable day.
