On Thursday 22 June 2017, Carlisle College held its annual awards ceremony. The event celebrates the outstanding achievements of its students (of which there were a lot of worthy nominees), recognised for their commitment and hard work over the last year.
As the main sponsor, David Allen IT Solutions were delighted to be in attendance to present the final two awards of the evening, to two very deserving learners.
The evening was opened by Steve Salkeld, Acting Principal for Carlisle College. As a former pupil of the college, he talked passionately about the work the college does, the engagement with the students and the pressures of the various merger talks with other colleges, which he has been involved with over the past couple of years. The final merger went through with Newcastle College Group (NCG) earlier this year and provides security for staff and students, as well as ongoing investment to allow Carlisle College to grow and flourish.
As one of the longest standing board members, of more than 15 years, David Carter was then welcomed to the stage where he spoke fondly of the time he has spent on the Carlisle College board and as a local guy, we enjoyed listening to him reminiscing on the time he spent at Trinity school and latterly Carlisle College.
The presentation of the awards then began, with Pioneer and Pirelli just some of the other businesses in attendance presenting to the worthy winners. All nominated students truly deserved to be recognised for their achievements, it was a humbling experience with some students working against all the odds and who are an inspiration to us all.
There was a short interval, where we were entertained with songs from learners from the music department while we enjoyed canapes and drinks from the college catering students.
Later in the evening, I was invited to the stage to present the main sponsor awards, Carlisle College Apprentice of the Year and Carlisle College Learner of the Year. As the evening was running ahead of schedule at this stage (it was only 7:10 pm and the evening was not due to finish until 8:00 pm), I lightened the tension by saying I had been asked to do a 45 minute speech to bring us back on track with the timescales! I only actually talked for a couple of minutes, sharing my own experiences of attending Carlisle College during 1989-1991 and my thoughts on the importance of the foundations that the college instils into young people as well as the importance of education as a whole.
Congratulations to Melanie Murray who won the Carlisle College Apprentice of the Year award, she is an apprentice at Nestle. The Carlisle College Learner of the Year category had a huge number of nominations from a variety of different disciplines. I read out a total of 18 nominations, all of whom were very deserving winners. Congratulations to the very credible winner, Lauren Robson.
The awards ceremony ended with thanks given to all the students, sponsors and teachers for making the evening such a success. It was an inspirational evening, celebrating local talent and Carlisle College which David Allen IT Solutions were proud to be a part of.
