Last night (24 July 2013) Workington Reds played Premiership team Newcastle United and David Allen were the main sponsors.
Willie Donachie and Peter Beardsley lead out the talented Newcastle Under 21 squad in this pre-season game which kicked off against Reds at 7.30pm. Julie Osborn and I were hosts to our guests Phil Jardine (Britain’s Energy Coast Business Cluster), Paul Armstrong (Finance Director at Thomas Armstrong), Tracey Stainton (Burnetts Solicitors), Scott Shankland and Barbara Minervini (HSBC) and Mark Reid (Accountant at Dobies, Workington) and his wife Lynne.
Workington AFC moved away from their traditional Red jerseys and wore specially designed purple shirts in support of the Great North Air Ambulance, which were auctioned at the end of the game to raise money for the charity.
Julie and I also met Workington Reds director, Glenn Heathcote of Lilley & Gillie, who work closely with the new sponsors Baker Tilly. Colin and his wife joined us after the match for drinks where he offered us an insight into how he sees the future at the club.
It was a very special night and the terraces proved that with great support from the local community. Although Workington Reds lost 3 -1 they held their own and it was a great game of football.
Many thanks to Workington Reds General Manager Alec Graham, who invited us to sponsor the game and looked after us on the night.
