Easter duck race

David Allen have entered a team into the Hospice at Home (Carlisle and North Lakeland) Coast2Coast cycle challenge, due to take place this June.  This challenge will see the team of Alison Allen, Lisa Irving, Vicky Johnston and Robert Nordon and I cycle 150miles in just three days in a journey that will take us across the breadth of Britain.

Our team are aiming to raise £4,000 for Hospice at Home and have already held a number of fundraising activities.  With Easter and the school holidays approaching we decided to hold an Easter themed event that promised to be fun for all ages.  The event took place at Alison and David Allen’s house in Dalston and included an Easter egg hunt, tombola, rubber duck race and some petting time with the Allen’s newly born Spring lambs.

The weather on Saturday was certainly suited to ducks with wind and rain battering down first thing in the morning.  This meant that the children’s Easter egg trail had to be relocated inside with treats hidden around the Allen house.

Friends and family all joined in the fun and donations were made to enjoy a delicious spread of homemade cakes and treats as well as plenty of cups of tea and coffee to warm up from the cold outside!

Luckily the weather broke and blue skies appeared ready for the duck race which consisted of a whopping 240 ducks being set loose in waves of 20 down the nearby beck.

Alison and Lisa (two of our fundraisers) donned their wellies and stood in the stream to catch the ducks as they crossed the finish line with the excited spectators cheering the ducks on as they floated their way down the stream.

For the weeks running up to the event the ducks were sold for £1 each with the lucky winner taking away a quarter of the total raised.  The winner was decided by racing the winning duck from each wave against each other in the grand final race which was won by Jo Douglas who very kindly donated her winnings back into the fundraising pot – thank you Jo!

Thanks to Jo’s kind donation and a wonderful, fun filled morning we raised nearly £500 – helping us well on our way to our fundraising goal.  The team would like to thank everyone involved, from those who donated prizes, baked cakes or just came along to support the fundraising activities.

Every penny counts and will edge us nearer to our total goal so if you would like to make a donation and sponsor our team please visit
