On Saturday 15 February I took my family along to the open day being held at Britain’s Energy Coast (BEC) Fab Lab in Cockermouth.
The Fab Lab is a place where anybody can make virtually anything. Offering a range of equipment and machines to stimulate creativity and imagination it will be open to young people, adults, businesses and entrepreneurs.
The types of equipment on offer include 3D printer, table top CNC milling, a laser cutter, vinyl cutter and much more. I spoke to Fab Lab manager Danny Frost who told me access to the Fab Lab is free you just have to pay for the machine hire and materials. He helped my children, Oliver and Elizabeth with their designs on the CADCAM which were then cut out on the laser cutter. They really enjoyed themselves and I would recommend a visit for inspiring inventors and engineers.
The team at Fab Lab have already been helping local businesses and will be continuing with a full programme of events and workshops. With a number of Fab Labs opening up across the world and it is great news that we have BEC Fab Lab open here in West Cumbria.
