Five ways to ensure your data is secure

Posted: July 1st, 2015

Your business data is one of your company’s most important assets, therefore you need to have robust procedures in place to ensure that it does not get lost, compromised or stolen.

Our IT experts have pulled together five ways you can secure your data:

Data centre

Our data centre provides a secure location where you can safely store your valuable business data away from your premises.  Our data centre has a number of features that all work together to make sure that your data is secure and available at all times.  These features include:

  • Battery backup and a generator to protect against power failure.
  • Multiple fibre internet lines to ensure there is a fast connection at all times.
  • Hardware that your server will automatically switch over to in the event of a system failure, preventing any loss of data or loss of productivity.
  • The data centre is located within a blast and flood proof, extremely secure building.

Our data centre is located in Carlisle so whether you are a large corporate company with hundreds of computers and servers spread over multiple locations, or a small business with only a few computers, using our local data centre will ensure your IT is safe and secure all of the time.

Backups

Backing up your data is crucial.  If a disaster was to happen, you need to be sure that your business information is safe and can be easily restored.  There are various ways in which you can backup your business data, and the options that are best for you and your business will depend on many things.  Our team will review your business and current backup strategies, and will suggest the best options for you, ensuring that your data is backed up securely in case the worst should happen.

Antivirus software

Cyber attacks on businesses are on the increase, hackers will try anything to get your private details whether this be your name, address or even bank account details.

Businesses need to have the right security systems and antivirus software in place to ensure that hackers can’t retrieve private information.  We are partners with leading intrusion protection and antivirus suppliers and can help you implement solutions across your business so that all of your devices, including smart phones and tablets, are fully protected.

Secure passwords

Having a secure password for servers, PC’s and laptops is an essential part of keeping your data safe and secure.  With weak passwords anyone could use your PC and gain access to the information stored on it.  As IT experts we recommend passwords to be at least eight characters long, include at least one uppercase letter and one form of punctuation.  We also recommend that passwords are changed regularly.

Cyber Essentials

Cyber Essentials is the Government’s flagship cyber security standard.  The scheme has been developed to provide clear guidelines around the basic controls companies and organisations should put in place to mitigate against risks from common internet based threats.  David Allen IT Solutions News were Cumbria’s first company to be approved to give advice and deliver guidance on Cyber Essentials.  We can assess your current IT security and will implement solutions to protect your business from cyber-attacks ensuring you meet the criteria of the Cyber Essentials programme.

We understand that every business is different so offer bespoke packages that are tailor-made to suit your businesses own, unique circumstances.
