What is your job title and what are your main responsibilities?
I research the whole of the market to find the right insurance when looking to protect somebody’s income, providing cover for a loan or a mortgage, arranging a death in service scheme for an employer, protecting an inheritance tax liability or even arranging private medical healthcare.
How did you get into Protection?
I developed within a bank and was given the opportunity to study to become a Financial Adviser, this is where my career in protection took off. After a number of years there were changes in the bank and I was working part time after having my daughter, it was at this time that I became a protection specialist. Protection is something I feel so strongly about as I myself have a complicated medical history; this gives me a passion to help others to understand the benefits of insurance. Money does not solve all problems, but the benefits paid from a claim most certainly help to buy time or give options, something that is very limited when solely relying on the state or the strained NHS today.
What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?
Achieving what people often think to be unachievable; when I take on a tough case and we actually provide the cover for someone who could be deemed ‘uninsurable’, the reward is fantastic.
What do you feel most proud of in your life to date?
Definitely Maddie, my little girl. She is nine now and definitely rules the roost.
What drives you to do what you do? What motivates you?
Before Coronavirus I would do a holiday countdown! My family and I live for our breaks away, but now I tend to focus on ‘which of my clients am I going to get results for this week?’ – this focus keeps me and my team going.
What three words describe you the best?
Challenging, rewarding and diverse.
Can you please tell us about a defining moment in your working life?
Walking through the door here at David Allen.
Just short of 3 years ago I came to see Steve Balmer for an informal chat following my redundancy from a previous employer. Typically, in financial services there is no such role as a protection specialist, this tends to be advice that is provided by an Independent Financial Adviser or a Mortgage Adviser, but I sat down with Steve and explained my passion for protection, why and where it came from. Steve appreciated all too well how so many people don’t understand what protection is, or how they see it as too complicated. Steve had so much faith in me that he created a Protection Adviser role, to supplement the existing team. Meaning we can further help individuals, families and businesses understand the place that protection has within financial planning, the benefits of having it, and the overall peace of mind it gives.
I have seen first-hand the benefit of protection through helping a number of clients receive payments from policies. Over the years, successful claims that I have helped clients with, have ranged from fracture cover, income being paid when unfit to work, to life insurance or critical illness. It is awful hearing of a loved ones passing but knowing that a claim has paid out to a family or business, brings a sense of relief, as they won’t financially struggle. The grief doesn’t change, I cannot take that away from anyone, but the financial security makes the situation that little bit easier.
If you could trade lives with one person for an entire day, who would it be and why?
I think I would have to become an astronaut for the day. I would love the opportunity to view the world from a completely different perspective.
What is your strongest personal quality?
Persistence, which is very much needed with my day-to-day job fighting for medical underwriting for my clients. It also comes in quite handy with my daughter!
Why should a client choose to work with yourself and the David Allen team?
We pride ourselves in being able to help all your needs under one roof. We specialise in the areas that we know best and work so closely as a team. In financial services there are a lot of areas to financial planning, this ranges from mortgages, pensions, investments and protection, and for the likes of myself it means that I can spend all my time keeping up to date with all aspects of protection. I pride myself in knowing the providers, the policies, and the marketplace inside out, therefore I can truly find the best solution for our clients. If focusing on too many things at once, it is human nature that some plates stop spinning, here at David Allen we help each other to keep them turning.
What is the first piece of advice you would give to someone starting their career in Financial Services, and specifically protection-based advice?
Remember that no two clients are the same! But also, for me it isn’t all just about the knowledge and experience of the role; my passion for protection comes from my own personal experience. I love doing all the hard work for my clients as they see the end results. My knowledge has been built up over ten years and my only focus is protection which means that I can keep up with changes happening in the protection industry, whether it be a new provider, new product or pricing restructure – so I know I can find the best cover at the best price for my clients.
