On Saturday 5 July 2014 Jaimi Wilson and Coral Mowbray from our Accounts team, along with three other local fitness enthusiasts, set off on the toughest physical and mental challenge they have faced so far- to run the 84 mile length of Hadrian’s wall from coast to coast in under 24 hours!
The idea came about 3 months earlier when they were all on a night out together. After a few drinks it seemed like a great idea, a date was set and they began their training to take on the wall. They decided to use the opportunity to benefit a worthwhile cause and raise money for charity, each of them choosing their own charity to fuel individual motivation for the task ahead. In total over £5,000 has been raised for The Northern Brainwave Appeal, Hospice at Home, Eden Valley Hospice, the British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association and the British Heart Foundation.
They set off from the start of the wall at Bowness-on-Solway on Saturday morning. The weather was fantastic and continued to stay that way for the entire run. The first 40 miles of the run was on pretty flat ground and went well, with the team in great spirits as they made their way across the country. As they approached Whinshields Crags with elevation of over 1,100 feet and some fantastic views, the miles really started to catch up with them – this was the most testing part of the route for the whole group. Luckily they had a fantastic support crew and friends at the end of this tough section to keep their motivation high and help them to continue on their way.
As the sun set the team put on their night gear and head torches continuing on their way to Wallsend. As the sun rose, with approximately 20 miles to go, Jaimi said “every step began to feel like agony but we managed to keep each other going and made it to Wallsend in 23 hours and 45 minutes, greeted again by cheers from our support team”.
Jaimi and Coral said “It was a fantastic feeling of achievement and we all felt completely overwhelmed as we hobbled to the end with blistered feet and aching joints, overcoming physical and mental barriers we had never encountered before. We are all extremely proud to have completed the challenge within the time we set and even more proud that we have managed to raise so much money for some fantastic charities that are close to all of our hearts. We would like to thank our brilliant support team along with many local businesses in the area, including David Allen, who donated vehicles, food, water and money to help us complete this amazing experience”.
I am extremely proud of Jaimi and Coral, they both do some amazing work within the office and conquering the wall in under 24 hours just proves how determined and committed they are to achieving fantastic results in whatever they do.
Congratulations to the whole team.
