I attended the In-Cumbria Digital Breakfast event at the Business Interaction Centre in Carlisle city centre yesterday morning, on Thursday 27 March.
The event was well attended by businesses and had several guest speakers ranging from small business owners to official representatives from BT.
It was great to hear from speakers who have embraced advances in social media technologies such as Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn to create additional revenue streams for their businesses. One recent start-up company described how after they had investigated the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) facility and put this into practice, they moved from page seven Google results to page one, transforming their online trading.
BT updated delegates on the current roll out of super-fast broadband throughout the UK. 46% of the UK are now able to receive super-fast internet access, including 28,400 actual premises in Carlisle. It’s fantastic to see this service now reaching our area, having a positive day to day impact on individuals and businesses.

Darren Crossley, Deputy Chief Executive of Carlisle City Council described plans to cover all of the city centre high street with free internet access. They are moving into the final planning stages and if approved the project would be completed by Autumn 2014.
