On Monday 7 July I attended an afternoon of sailing at Glenridding Sailing Centre on Ullswater. The afternoon was organised by In-Cumbria who are doing a feature in their magazine on team building and what Cumbria has to offer when it comes to these activities. Upon arrival I was introduced to seven other professionals from around the county and was allocated to a team of four. Once we got out on to the lake we spent a couple of hours getting to grips with the boat and learning how to sail.
Once we mastered the basics (as best we could) we sailed back to the centre where we were given a team briefing before heading out to race against the other team of four. We had three races around a specifically marked course on the lake, the team with the most wins took home the prize of a bottle of champagne. Fortunately I found myself on the winning team; however we decided to share the bottle with everyone as we felt it was only fair.
The sail race experience entailed team work, communication, and thinking ahead, mixed with a large amount of fun. Team building exercises such as this are a fantastic way to improve working relationships and productivity in the workplace. Having the Lake District on our doorstep means that we are spoiled for choice when it comes to teambuilding opportunities, something which is often taken for granted.
All in all it was a fantastic day, the team at The Sailing Centre were brilliant and more importantly were very patient whilst we tried to get the hang of things! The David Allen team will definitely look to continue to participate in team building events in the future and thank In-Cumbria for allowing us to be part of a unique event.
