Earlier this year David Allen received an invitation from Handelsbanken to take part in the first Inter Professional Rounders Tournament in aid of Eden Valley Hospice.
There were volunteers from a variety of ages and different areas of David Allen jumping at the chance to take part and raise funds for such a good cause. With the promise that sunshine had been ordered for the evening, the team donned their David Allen polo shirts and got their heads together, coming up with the team name “Allen’s A Team”.
The event was held at Carlisle Rugby Club on Friday evening (5 September) with a total of eleven teams participating. Group and team photos were kindly taken by the News & Star and by 6.00pm we were all ready to begin. With two pools of teams, and at any one time four games being played simultaneously, the evening proved busy for all of the competitors! There were people from different local professions including accountants, solicitors and chartered surveyors all taking part meaning the evening was a great opportunity to meet people from other firms and professions in a relaxed, all be it competitive, environment.
Unfortunately the promised good weather didn’t continue for the whole night and by 7:30pm it had started to rain. This made the pitches rather slippy allowing for some rather dodgy (and amusing) stopping at the bases. Unfortunately due to the persistence of the rain the final game had to be cancelled, however by this point a clear winner was obvious to all.
With red faces and some rather stiff muscles, our very own Gary needed a lie down in the car park while Mark not only helped stretch his legs out but along with the rest of the team had a good giggle at his expense, we all headed back to the club house for a complimentary bar and delicious BBQ. After a few well deserved cold beverages and burgers were enjoyed, the awards for the evening were handed out. Bell Park Kerridge unfortunately won the wooden spoon but congratulations to Hyde Harrington for winning the first place trophy and all four of their games!
In total £1,100 was raised for Eden Valley Hospice and we would like to extend a huge thank you to Handelsbanken for organising the event and of course thanks must also go to the umpires for keeping us all in check! Another thank you must be given to Carlisle Rugby Club for allowing us to take over their pitches for a couple of hours.
A brilliant night was had by all and we very much are looking forward to next year’s tournament and hopefully raising even more money.
