On Thursday 7 July, Gary Jackson and I had the pleasure of attending the Awards ceremony of Lakes College, West Cumbria to celebrate and recognise the achievements of students.
Before the ceremony started we enjoyed a drinks and buffet reception in the College canteen which was prepared by the catering students, restaurant quality at its best!
We were then led into the theatre where we were seated in a jam packed room of students, family, friends, sponsors and guest. The awards ceremony began; introduced by Chris Nattress, College Principal who spoke of how proud he was of the achievements of the College and the students. Chris went on to share the future plans and vision for the College with lots if exciting developments in the midst.
The guest speaker for the event was John Male, Curriculum and Qualifications Manager at NuGen who entertained us with his own career story before praising the achievements of all of the students and sharing how vital each of them are to the future success of Cumbria.
John then went on to present the Higher Awards with students being recognised across a variety of industry sectors from education, childcare and electronic engineering to name just a few.
Daniel Johnson then took to the stage and gave an inspirational presentation sharing his own experience as a student at Lakes College, originally commencing as an apprentice in the nuclear industry before returning to the College to pursue his passion studying art. Daniel talked about how his time spent at the College had developed him in his chosen area of study but more so personally, giving him the confidence and resilience he needed to pursue and achieve his dreams of becoming an Animator. Daniel is now moving onto university, aims to compete his degree and is willing to move anywhere in the world to apply his skills and achieve his goals. He was a truly entertaining individual who I have no doubt will succeed in all he sets out to do.
The ceremony continued with the Higher Education Special Awards being presented, followed by the Further Education Awards. Chris Morrison was recognised as the Academic Achiever of the Year and the Special Achievement of the Year was awarded to Dulcie Hyland for her commitment to her studies as well as the local community.
As a main sponsor of the event I had the pleasure of presenting the Apprentice of the Year Award in the Business Academy to Jessica Warren.
As a business David Allen encourage a culture of personal development and is committed to recruiting, developing and training our people to be the next generation of business leaders. We have a number of apprentices across the business, some of whom attend Lakes College as part of their studies and it was a delight to recognise and share the students efforts and achievements during a fantastic evening.
A lot of hard work was clearly put in by both the students and teachers to ensure the evening ran smoothly. Another facility in West Cumbria for students of further education, and something that will hopefully help to keep our future talent in Cumbria.
