This year, the annual week-long celebration of apprenticeships will be taking place the week commencing 7 February 2022.  Our Training and Development Manager, Sheryl Dobson gave us her personal insight:

‘As someone who has completed an apprenticeship, and now works alongside others within the firm helping them to complete theirs, I can see all of the benefits that apprenticeships bring to both the apprentice and the employer.

My own personal journey began with David Allen over 10 years ago, completing my apprenticeship in Accountancy and I have never looked back.  One of the main benefits for me was that I could earn my own money whilst learning on the job.  In addition to this, the skills and relevant experience you gain is invaluable.  The support I received from my mentor, Julie Osborn really pushed me and inspired me to get more involved with the training here at #TeamDA.  I love working with new starters and seeing them develop into their roles and reaching their career goals.  Here at David Allen the sky really is the limit, and all staff members are supported and encouraged to get to where they want to be.

Recruiting apprentices is the way forward for us as a firm, we have seen first-hand how this can build our future and the magnitude of what apprentices can achieve with the right support and encouragement.’

Whilst at college the learning is concentrated so when they get back into the office, they are raring to put this into action.  Our managers have monthly catch ups with the lecturers along with the apprentice to regularly check in on progress.

We have a fantastic relationship with Carlisle College who really help and support our apprentices along the way.  Sarah March, Apprenticeship Manager at Carlisle College said:

‘We have worked with David Allen for many years now and have had numerous apprentices’ study with us.  Apprentices learn on the job, build up knowledge and professional skills and gain recognised qualifications all whilst earning a wage.  David Allen offers a lot of support to their employees who want to take part in training and improving skills and so we are pleased to be able to support that.  Apprenticeships are also a great way to upskill existing staff as well as new.  Apprentices have excellent progression opportunities, whether looking to study further or climb the ranks within the workplace and this is evident at David Allen.  We really look forward to continuing to work together in the future.’

Our current apprentices are working very hard to achieve their dreams and we are with them all the way.  Alex Martindale, Accounts Apprentice said, ‘My main duties are preparing and completing VAT returns and I am currently learning how to prepare a set of trading accounts which is an exciting new challenge.  I love David Allen as they offer a lot of opportunities for people to improve and grow within the business.  Nothing is ever too much to ask which is a great environment to work in.  There is something new every day which makes it very interesting.’
