On Wednesday evening Steve Balmer and I attended the PDC World Matchplay Darts Championship at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool at the invitation of Aberdeen Asset Managers and Zurich. We also met Connor Carson from our Dalston office who was there with a group of friends. The Winter Gardens was a sell-out and the atmosphere inside the venue was fantastic and every bit as good as it looks on TV. The first game featured Dutchman Michael van Gerwen who, on his way to victory over Steve Beaton, threw a perfect 9 dart finish something that doesn’t happen that often and so was a great start to the night.
James ‘The Machine’ Wade easily overpowered an off-form Mark Walsh in the next match winning 13-4. The third match proved to be the best of the night with the crowd at the outset seemingly to favour another Dutch master Raymond van Barneveld over Terry Jenkins. However as the match progressed the support in the hall for Jenkins grew and that seemed to spur him on to a fabulous victory over Barney by 13-10.
The final match featured Adrian ‘Jackpot’ Lewis against Andy ‘The Pieman’ Smith. Unfortunately The Pieman struggled to match Jackpot’s scoring and the world number 2 ran out a comfortable winner 13 -7.
The players may not be competing in the Olympics starting this week but they certainly showed some fantastic skill and provided a great evening’s entertainment. If anyone likes darts I would thoroughly recommend seeing it live if you get the chance.
