On Thursday 12 October 2017, Hannah Cundall and I visited Energus in Workington to deliver a presentation to around 40 postgraduates regarding the importance of effective retirement planning. All in attendance were employees of Energus under their nucleargraduates scheme, and included a mix of Mechanical Engineers, Psychologists and Scientists.
There are currently 12 sponsors involved in the nucleargraduate programme, all of whom are well established companies from all around the country. These include Sellafield Ltd, Rolls-Royce, Magnox, Low Level Waste Repository, International Nuclear Services, Jacobs, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), The Office for Nuclear Regulation, Radioactive Waste Management Ltd, Nuclear AMRC and the Environment Agency.
Established in 2008 by the NDA, nucleargraduates recruits, employs, develops and delivers graduates for their sponsors, for them to employ after two years. The programme is designed to develop graduates with an awareness of the technical, political and commercial challenges of the industry. Sponsors state their specific requirements and nucleargraduates recruits against their set criteria, e.g. degree discipline.
On arrival we were met by Carolyne Taylor from Energus and after a brief welcome over a coffee, we went through to the auditorium where we set up and prepared for the presentation. Our David Allen mugs were proudly on display, alongside some handy leaflets ready to give out following my talk. The attendees seemed to enjoy my hour long presentation which was followed by a lively and enthusiastic question and answer session where various topics were addressed, including the investment of pension monies, the different type of pensions available and how much should be set aside for retirement planning.
What stood out to me was the keen interest and engagement that the delegates showed in the topic, recognising the importance of starting to save early to plan for their future.
I would like to thank the staff at Energus for this fantastic opportunity and for their great hospitality. It is a pleasure to be associated with an award winning organisation who strives to exceed and it is very much evident they are leading the way in the nuclear industry.
