Manager of the Dumfries office and trainee accountant Amy Muirhead explains her move back to Dumfries from Glasgow and career progression.
I moved to Glasgow to attend university, graduating in 2016. I then went travelling for a year, before moving back home to Thornhill in Dumfries & Galloway. The area has a lovely community spirit, an amazing countryside to enjoy and it is in an ideal location to travel to big cities – best of both worlds.
Why David Allen?
My interview was with Julie Osborn and I quickly realised that I would fit in well with their straight talking and no fuss attitude/approach. It looked like a great opportunity to work with ambitious achievers and I would be well supported throughout my career.
What it’s like to work at David Allen
A typical day for me will start between 7.30 and 8.00. The first thing I do is check calendar entries for the day and my to-do list.. As a recently appointed manager, I prioritise my to do-list, which allows me to manage my workload better, be productive and it helps me to delegate. I then check my emails. It is important that client queries are answered quickly. I have a quick catch up with my team to check how jobs are progressing or what jobs they are working on that day.
During the day, I carry out a range of accounting tasks – from accounts and VAT returns to client meetings. It is really rewarding to advise small business owners to help them succeed. We work with a variety of clients, including sole traders, partnerships, limited companies and charities. Accountancy is not simply just a matter of sitting in front of a screen all day. No two days are the same and that is what I love about my job.
In the evening, my development continues as I study toward my CA qualification. David Allen are dedicated to developing their people and this is shown in the support they give me for my studies.
On top of the day to day work and studies, I keep involved with the social side of the business by helping with Charity of the Year projects and of course our stand at Dumfries Show.
I enjoy the team culture, flexibility, straight talking and no fuss approach, the partners are down to earth and approachable and the company recognise potential in their people.
