On Friday evening (16 May 2014) six members of the David Allen team let their competitive sides out as we popped down to Foxy’s restaurant at Carlisle United for The Cumberland Society of Chartered Accountant’s quiz.
There were five teams in total from four of the county’s top accountants – David Allen, Saint & Co, Dodd & Co and Armstrong Watson. Our David Allen team consisted of Mark James, Leanne Tickle, Julie Osborn, Melanie Thomson, Hannah Jackson and myself (a good mixture from the different business areas from our office). We set out by deciding on a team name (and with a prize for the best one) we were lucky to find our inspiration from newly married Leanne, coming up with ‘The Test Tickles’!
The quiz consisted of two picture rounds and eight question rounds, with topics ranging from general knowledge to food and drink, geography, history, TV and film and current events. We stormed ahead after the first four rounds proudly holding first position as we reached half time. At this point we all enjoyed a delicious supper of lasagne or chicken curry knowing that if it all went wrong in the second half of the evening we would still have some glory!
The question papers were collected in and we waited as the results were read out… in last place and winners of the wooden spoons with 62.5 points was “Double Entry” from Armstrong Watson, in fourth with 65 points was the smallest team “Button Short of a Calculator” from Saint & Co, in third was “Nameless and Shameless” from Dodd & Co with 66 points, in second place with 72 points was “Mastermind” from Saint & Co and through our cheers we heard our team name read out in first place with 78 points!
With bottles of wine and chocolates for the runners up and £50 prize for us to share as the winners we burst out in laughter as our inventive team name was also announced the winner (as one of the hosts hadn’t realised our pun until she read the name aloud!).
We had a great evening testing our general knowledge and are looking forward to the next quiz.
