The Cumbrian Run 2012

Yesterday I took part in the Cumbrian Run with my sister, Yvonne, to raise money for the NSPCC.  As the runners were arranged on the start line, inside the grounds of Carlisle Castle, in order of expected finish time we lined up nervously at the back of the field alongside Santa Claus, Batman and Robin!

Exiting the Castle the run took us through the town centre to Botchergate and up London Road before turning off to run to Wetheral and Scotby.  Many people took time to line the course of the run and cheer the runners on which definitely helped us run a bit further when we felt like walking.  We managed most of the race at a comfortable pace but heading out onto Warwick Road we started to struggle.  Our determination to finish and beat the bus that was there to pick up runners who didn’t make the cut-off time of 3 hours and 15 minutes saw us through to the end.  Although we comfortably beat the bus it was an anti-climax heading onto the Sheepmount running track for the finish line.

Usually an announcer reads your name out as you approach the finish and you run through an inflatable arch way.  Yesterday the announcer must have gone home early and they had deflated the arch way although they did hold it up for us to run under!  It was an enjoyable day and we will definitely do it again next year!

If anyone would like to sponsor us then you can do so at or you can text YNRN81 followed by the amount, for example YNRN81 £10, to 70070.  Any donation will be gratefully received, thank you.
