On Tuesday 4 March 2014 I was invited, along with many other representatives of the local business community, to St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic School, Workington to take part in their Work Ready Day Programme.
Along with academic education it is vital that our young people are prepared for the working world and to assist with this preparation a programme has been established aimed at introducing and developing their confidence and skills. The programme has run for several years now and the school are noticing the benefits to their students when they are talking to potential work or study providers.
Each of the pupils attending were asked to prepare a C.V. and application form for their ‘model job’ and it was our task to conduct a mock interview in order to give them an idea of how to promote themselves in this situation. I interviewed year 9 pupils who were taking part for the first time and five year 10 pupils, two of which I had interviewed last year. It was encouraging to see how both students had developed over the past twelve months and that they were continuing to pursue a career in accountancy.
