What to expect when swearing an Oath or Affidavits
We regularly help individuals with oaths, affirmations and affidavits required for court proceedings, professional or government applications and financial matters.
If you are unsure whether your document needs to be sworn, our specialist advisers will review it for you and clearly explain the next steps before your appointment. We believe no question is too small when it comes to getting important paperwork right.
A member of our specialist Wills and Probate team will check that your document is complete and confirm that you understand what you are signing. You will then read a short statement aloud with David to confirm that the contents are true, before signing the document in our presence. We will complete the required wording to confirm that the oath has been properly administered.
What is the difference between an oath, an affirmations and an affidavit?
An oath and an affirmation are formal ways of confirming that information is true. An oath is sworn with a religious reference, while an affirmation is a non-religious alternative. An affidavit is a written statement of facts that is confirmed by swearing an oath or making an affirmation. Our specialist Wills and Probate team will explain which applies to your document and guide you through the process, ensuring everything is completed clearly, correctly and with confidence.
What should you bring to your appointment
Before attending your appointment, please ensure your document is fully completed and that any exhibits or attachments are included. If you are unsure whether your paperwork is ready, you are welcome to email us a copy in advance and a member of our team will be happy to review it for you.
In addition, we ask that you bring a form of photo ID to help us confirm your identity and ensure your appointment runs smoothly. If you do not have ID available, please contact us in advance and we will discuss how we may still be able to support you.
Time and Fees
Appointments usually take between ten and twenty minutes, and we guide you through each step so you can proceed with confidence.
Fees for administering oaths, affirmations and affidavits are set by law and are usually modest, starting from £5. If your document includes exhibits or attachments, we will explain any additional costs clearly before your appointment.
