Following the 2023 Spring Budget, when the Government reinstated the ‘Triple Lock’, the full rate of new State Pension increased by 10.1% to £203.85 per week, with effect from 6 April 2023.
In the new State Pension accrual system, you are required to have at least 10 qualifying years of NI contributions to qualify for a UK State Pension, you will need 35 qualifying years for the full new State Pension. Gaps in your NI contribution record may have arisen from maternity leave or extended leave for other circumstances.
When the ‘Triple Lock’ reinstation was announced, a deadline of July 2023 was in place to allow you to make up any necessary National Insurance (NI) contributions, for partial or missing years. This deadline has now been extended to 5 April 2025.
Class 3 voluntary NI contributions made before 5 April 2025 will be at the Class 3 voluntary NI rates for the 2022/23 tax year of £15.85 per week, or £824.20 for each full year.
You are able to find out how many qualifying years you have by logging in to the Government Gateway at Check your State Pension forecast – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) and if you do have any gaps within your contribution record, going back to April 2006 you can make voluntary contributions to possibly improve your State Pension Entitlement.
Before making a payment, it is advisable to contact DWP Future Pensions Centre on 08007 310175 to confirm which missing years will generate the most benefit to your entitlement for the lowest cost and to ensure the action you take will actually improve your State Pension.
