Our Mortgage Adviser Kelly Hillier discusses the importance of using a mortgage broker
Buying a new home is quite possibly the biggest purchase you will ever make, which can make it a stressful and confusing time, especially for those who have not purchased before.
But at the same time, taking out a mortgage can also be an exciting and rewarding time, and for our independent mortgage broker Kelly Hillier, it’s for this very reason why she loves to help and support her clients to find a great deal to purchase their new home, or indeed to save money on their monthly payments.
But with mortgage information becoming more prevalent online and individuals buying and selling more times in their life than generations prior, Kelly explains why the role of a mortgage broker is more important than ever before.
Most people focus on finding the cheapest or best mortgage deal, but the role of a mortgage broker has more to do with making the mortgage process smooth and reducing the stress, to make the overall experience much better. Of course, cost effective mortgage deals are most people’s number one priority, but there is so much more to factor in when you finally take the plunge in to the mortgage pool.
Changes such as the financial crisis of 2007/08 and the current Coronavirus pandemic have resulted in lenders becoming much fussier about who they lend money to and has caused some mortgage providers to withdraw from the market completely. That said, there remains a significant number of lenders out there to choose from, so how do you know which one to go for?
When helping my clients choose their mortgage, we look at the exercise as not just a loan to buy your home, but rather part of your overall financial goals and objectives for your future too. This can take into consideration any career changes, your plan to start a family and of course when you ideally want to retire. For a first-time buyer, this might seem like a long way off, but if I’ve learnt one thing during my career, its that these instances come around quick! And its never too early to plan.
For those who aren’t too familiar with the mortgage market, a broker can play a crucial part in ensuring you get the right deal catered to you. Independent brokers, such as myself, have access to the whole of the market. When we combine this with the fact that some lenders are being a bit fussy, it means that if one opportunity falls through, I’m right there getting you on to the next. For you, this removes the stress of finding another lender, applying to that lender, getting all your paperwork re-submitted and never mind the horror of potentially losing the house you’ve made an offer on!
We are the middleman so we’re there to chase the solicitors as well as ensure the potential mortgage provider has all they need in terms of the administration burden. Its important that you understand the process too, as home buying and home moving can be a lengthy journey. It’s therefore up to me to explain, in layman’s terms, what is happening at each stage.
Ultimately, I want to make this process enjoyable for you. Not only are we talking about the biggest financial commitment of your lifetime, but this is your new home! It’s an exciting time and not something that should be overcome with the worry of ‘have I found the best mortgage out there for me?’. That’s my job.
