A new year is a natural moment to pause, reflect and look ahead. When it comes to your finances, the most effective resolutions are those that are clear, realistic and easy to measure. With that in mind, we have outlined a number of practical financial considerations for 2026 to help you start the year with confidence.
Life rarely stands still. Economic conditions change, and so do personal circumstances. Whether you have inherited money, sold a business, experienced a change in family circumstances or simply found that your priorities have shifted, it is important to take stock. A financial plan that worked well last year may no longer be the right fit today.
Start with a meaningful review
Your financial plan should be reviewed regularly, ideally once a year, to make sure it still reflects your life, ambitions and priorities. Over time, income can change, families grow, and long-term goals evolve. External factors, such as interest rates, investment performance and the cost of living, also play a role. Without regular reviews, even a well-built plan can become outdated.
The start of a new year provides a natural opportunity to step back and reassess. It allows you to reflect on the past 12 months, review progress against previous goals and make adjustments for the year ahead. With the festive period behind us, many people find they have the headspace to focus on practical matters, including their finances.
So, where should you begin?
Making the most of tax-efficient wrappers
Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) are often a sensible starting point. They provide a simple and highly tax-efficient way to hold both cash and investments, with protection from Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax. You can invest up to £20,000 each tax year, and with the tax year ending on 5 April, now is the time to check whether you are making full use of your allowance for 2025/26.
There are different types of ISAs to suit different needs. Cash ISAs offer a low risk way to earn tax-free interest on savings, while Stocks and Shares ISAs allow you to invest in assets such as shares, bonds and funds, with any growth or income remaining tax-efficient.
Helping your money work harder
For those with a longer-term outlook and a higher tolerance for risk, Stocks and Shares ISAs can play an important role in growing wealth over time. Many people choose to hold a combination of Cash, Stocks and Shares ISAs and investing options, balancing security with growth potential in line with their personal goals.
Using your ISA allowance effectively can strengthen your wider financial strategy, helping to improve overall tax efficiency while keeping flexibility.
Reviewing your pension position
Pensions remain one of the most powerful long-term planning tools. The current annual pension contribution allowance is £60,000, subject to earnings and other rules such as the Annual Allowance and the Money Purchase Annual Allowance.
If you are in a position to contribute regularly, it is worth checking that you are making the most of what is available to you before the end of the tax year. Pension rules can be complex, and their impact depends heavily on your individual circumstances and tax position. Taking professional advice can help ensure you are using pensions effectively as part of your wider retirement planning.
Planning ahead for wealth transfer
If passing on wealth is part of your long-term plans, gifting allowances can be a valuable tool. Each individual can gift up to £3,000 per year free from Inheritance Tax, and if unused, this allowance can be carried forward for one year. This means it may be possible to gift up to £6,000 before the end of the 2025/26 tax year if last year’s allowance was not used.
Gifting should always be considered as part of a broader financial plan. It can work well alongside other approaches, such as contributing to Junior ISAs or helping with education costs, provided you remain confident that your own future financial needs are fully covered.
Open conversations build confidence
Inheritance Tax planning is just one element of effective intergenerational planning. Many families find conversations around wealth difficult to start, but openness can make a real difference. Introducing your children or other beneficiaries to your advisers and involving them in appropriate discussions can help prepare them for the future and give you confidence that your wishes will be understood.
By taking time now to review and refine your financial plans, you can take practical steps towards a more secure future for yourself and your family.
