From understanding the unique financial challenges farmers face to building lifelong skills, Megan Powell has begun her placement year immersed in the world of agriculture accountancy.  We sat down with Megan after her first couple of months to hear about her experiences, lessons so far and why this placement could be the perfect step for anyone considering a career in the sector.

When I first considered an industry placement, I knew I wanted something that combined my interest in finance and the farming industry, and agricultural accountancy offered exactly that.  What really drew me in was the chance to see how numbers translate into practical decisions on the farm.  It is one thing to work with spreadsheets, but another to understand how those figures influence livestock management, crop planning, or investment in new technology.

I was also excited by the idea of working in a sector that is constantly evolving, whether it is responding to environmental changes, adapting to new regulations, or embracing fresh innovations.  That sense of movement and challenge made it clear this was the kind of environment I could thrive in.

Before I started, I imagined the role would be quite technical, spreadsheets, financial reports, and compliance checks.  However, it has turned out to be much more varied than I expected.  One moment that really stood out was when I was able to support my colleagues by taking on routine tasks.  It might seem small, but it freed them up to focus on more complex work, and I felt like I was genuinely contributing to the team.  Another time, I took the initiative to improve a filing system while sorting through documents, which made things more efficient for others.  It was rewarding to know I had helped streamline a process.

One of the steepest learning curves has been understanding agricultural regulations and compliance requirements.  There is a lot to take in, but it helped me grasp the bigger picture of how the industry operates.  I also had to quickly get to grips with accounting software and understand how to use it efficiently.  Adjusting to the pace and precision expected in a professional setting is a big shift, it has taught me how important it is to be both fast and accurate, especially when others rely on your work.

Working in agricultural accountancy is really opened my eyes to how closely the numbers connect to what farmers deal with day to day.  I have begun to understand the importance of deadlines and compliance, and how even small errors can have a big impact.  Making me more careful and aware of the broader consequences of my work.

Even within these first few months, I have seen real improvement in my technical skills, especially in Excel and accounting software.  Using them daily helped me become more confident and efficient.  I have also got better at spotting and resolving discrepancies, which sharpened my problem solving abilities.  Working closely with the team has really helped me improve my communication skills, it is important to share your thoughts, work well with others, and be open to feedback.

One thing that really surprised me was how varied the tasks are, even at assistant level.  I had not expected to be trusted with so much responsibility so early on, which is both exciting and a little daunting.  Additionally, I have also come to appreciate just how central communication and teamwork are to the role.  It is not just about working with numbers, it is about working with people across different areas to get things done.

The team have been incredibly supportive of me joining David Allen on placement.  Regular feedback sessions helped boost my confidence and gave me a clear sense of progress.  They encouraged me to take on responsibility early, which made me feel trusted and capable.  What made a big difference was the open and approachable environment, knowing I could ask questions without hesitation.  They also took the time to explain processes clearly, including the reasoning behind them, which helped me understand the bigger picture and develop my skills more quickly.

At David Allen it is clear they are passionate about their people, they want to help you grow.  From the very start of my placement I was asked to attend the local agricultural shows representing the brand, not only was this was a great opportunity to gain client understanding, I also really enjoyed getting to know others who work in different areas of the business.  I felt included and valued from the start, I wasn’t just a number at David Allen I had become part of a family.

Looking back, the placement has had a real impact on my career plans.  It confirmed that I would like to pursue a career in accountancy, particularly within the agricultural sector.  I have seen how valuable it is to combine technical skills with an understanding of the farming industry, it adds real depth to the work.  The experience also motivated me to aim for further qualifications so I can continue building on what I have learned.

If I could give one piece of advice to someone considering a placement in agricultural accountancy, it would be always feel able to ask questions.  Whether you are speaking to farmers or accountants, people really appreciate genuine interest and curiosity.  It is a brilliant opportunity to develop both technical skills and a broader understanding of how businesses operate.  The more proactive you are in asking questions and getting involved, the more you will learn and grow.
