A team of keen David Allen runners are making their mark in two famous running events, in order to raise money for their charity of the year, the Lake District Calvert Trust.
Emily Smith, Hannah Heslop, Emma Middleton, Sally Cleghorn and Rosie Groves are all participating in the largest half marathon in the world, The Great North Run. The big event, that famously finishes at South Shields, takes place on Sunday 11 September.
Emily Smith, a Paraplanner in the Financial Services team said: ‘I wanted to do the Great North Run to challenge myself and help improve the lives of others. I only started running at the end of last year and I thought this would be a great way to motivate and push myself. It is even more of an incentive knowing I am doing this for a great cause to help improve the lives of those that aren’t as lucky as we are suffering with physical, learning and sensory disabilities.’
The Lake District Calvert Trust, situated above Bassenthwaite Lake, provides an array of outdoor activities such as hand biking, cycling, ghyll scrambling, orienteering and much more. They enable people with even the most profound and complex of needs to enjoy challenging outdoor adventure, helping them build self-confidence, acquire new skills, make friends and most importantly have fun.
Hannah Heslop, an Independent Financial Adviser in the Financial Services team said: ‘I’ve always loved running but have struggled to motivate myself after knee surgery, this was a great opportunity to do something for myself and for others. Having visited the Lake District Calvert Trust recently it’s a great faciality and a great cause.’
The money raised by the team will also support the charities other sites; Bowderstone Bunkhouse which is a self-catered property that sleeps 12 people in bunk style beds. The property is suited to outdoor groups looking to stay in a location where their chosen activity is right on the doorstep. Whether it be climbers, fell-walking clubs, mountain bikers, scout groups, University clubs or Duke of Edinburgh participants, you are right in the heart of countryside, just a few steps away from the iconic Bowderstone. They also have a riding school based at the foot of Latrigg Fell that is a British Horse Society approved riding establishment.
Emma Middleton, Accounts Manager based at Workington, said: ‘The Calvert Trust is our charity of the year at David Allen. The work they carry out allows disabled adults and children to participate in activities in the Lake District which they may otherwise not be able to do. Having known people who have benefited from the charity in the past, they really do make an amazing difference to people’s lives. I recently got into running when gyms were shut due to the Coronavirus pandemic, I am looking forward to the challenge I have set myself.’
Louise Thomson, Tax Manager, has set herself the challenge of running the London Marathon taking place on Sunday 2 October. The world-famous route encompasses many of the capital’s landmarks.
Louise said: ‘I am so excited to be able to take part in the London Marathon, I have completed the route before and really wanted to do it again. Running to raise money for the Lake District Calvert Trust makes it even more special and I hope to do them proud.’
